H.E.R.O. Newsletter - October 24, 2005 |
The second payment for HERO classes was due October 20.
Please make your payments ASAP and put your check in the Administrators
mailbox. There are still some
families who have not signed up for their volunteer hours.
If you have not signed up for your hours, please contact the
following persons. If we do not hear from you, we will add the “Buy-Out” fee
of $15 per hour to your invoice.
HERO has a member email list. If you did not receive the “test” email, please contact Cheryl at herofamilies@hotmail.com or by phone at (763) 786-0338. In your e-mail, please give us your first and last name. Also, please make sure that the e-mail address is on your safe list so that you will receive our emails. Your email address will only be used for correspondence to you. You will not be replying to these emails. If you have questions or concerns, they should still be sent to jaynew@mnhero.org. HERO parents should receive a student/teacher evaluation in their mailbox this week for each of the classes that their student is enrolled in. Please sign the evaluation and indicate whether or not you wish a conference with the teacher. The conference can be done in person, email, or by phone. You will receive a final copy of this evaluation at the end of the semester. Please communicate with the teacher any concerns or questions you might have regarding the class or homework assignments. Life Touch Photography will take HERO school pictures on November 1 at Forest Lake and November 3 at Woodbury. We need all students and HERO teachers to get their pictures taken, even if they are not purchasing a picture package. HERO will use the student pictures for the HERO yearbook. Each student will be issued a HERO student ID card free of charge. Minnesota homeschool students are required to take a national norm reference test. You can order these tests from several testing agencies. HERO offers two forms of national norm reference tests. In your HERO Parent Handbook there is an order form for the SAT (Stamford Achievement Test), which is available for grades K-12. HERO orders this test with North Heights Christian Academy in Roseville. This is a Christian version and has a Bible section, which is optional to take. You will find the order form for this test in your HERO Parent Handbook. The HERO test order form must be filled out and turned into Jayne Wahlberg by Friday, November 11. The tests will arrive in early March. At that time you will have approximately three weeks to test your students. The test and answer key must be returned to Jayne so that she can mail them in to the testing agency for scoring. The test results will come back by mid-June. More details regarding this test are in the HERO handbook. HERO will also be offering the Peabody Test at the HERO Forest Lake site on Wednesday, May 31. This is an oral test administered by a certified Peabody tester. The test takes approximately 2-3 hours to administer. More details will be coming regarding this test and how to register to take it at HERO. HERO has school spirit week November 7-10. The theme for this week is “Bad Hair Day.” Two winners are picked each day and they receive a $5 lunch card. Students are judged on: creativity, positive attitude, and coming to school prepared for the event. Students who change or dress at school are automatically disqualified. There is a senior class meeting for the 2006 HERO graduates on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 PM at Denny’s Restaurant in Maplewood. We have reserved the meeting room. All 2006 graduates need to be represented at the meeting. We have four tickets for sale for the HERO Chanhassen Field trip this Saturday, October 29. The event starts with a backstage tour at 10 AM followed by lunch and the play, “Beauty and the Beast.” Tickets are $36. Please see Jayne Wahlberg if you wish to purchase any of these tickets. HERO is working the Herberger’s Community Event Sale again this year. The sale is Saturday, November 19. We are in need of one more volunteer (age 16 to adult) to cover the 8-11 AM shift. HERO receives approximately $50-$70 per volunteer for this event. HERO is selling the Herberger’s coupon books for this event. Each coupon book sells for $5 and it contains a $5 off coupon along with six 20% off coupons. Coupon books are available where you purchase HERO lunch cards. HERO receives the entire $5 for each coupon books that is purchases before November 16. In the past this fundraising event has profited HERO between $300-$400. The following persons coordinate Scholastic Book orders.
Lisa Juliar coordinates God’s World Magazine orders at both HERO sites. If you wish to still get a subscription to the magazine, please contact Lisa at (651) 653-8307. Jason Jensen, a HERO member, is with the MN DNR. He is offering HERO students safety classes in firearms, snowmobiles, ATV’s and boats. If you are interested in any of these classes, please contact Jayne Wahlberg or Jason at (651) 408-1059. If we have enough interest, we will schedule the classes. The HERO Forest Lake choirs will be performing a holiday music concert at the Mall of America on Friday, December 9 at 3:00 PM in the Rotunda. We encourage HERO families to come and support the students. Check the HERO website, www.mnhero.org and go to “Events” to get updated information regarding field trips and all other HERO events. |
