Latina Student Book 1. |
Conversational Sign Language
|
Grade
4-12 |
The main series of lessons in the ASL program that I am
using for this course is based on research done into what are the most
common concepts and words used in everyday communication and understanding
the ASL, counterparts to those words. I use vocabulary lists that have
been compiled from research that was based on a language corpus of hundreds
of thousands of language samples. The most frequently used concepts
were than translated into their ASL equivalents and were than placed into
the lessons starting with the most frequently used language concepts and
moving toward the less frequently used concepts. The lessons are
designed to help a student reach maximum communicative competence very
quickly-and it is based on second language acquisition research. The
vocabulary order of introduction is a balance between themes and language
frequency. While the vocabulary may seem to be random, each vocabulary
concept was scientifically selected for each lesson to expedite the rate at
which students can actually use the language for everyday communication
tasks. This is a fast paced course, students will be able to put
together and use ASL sentences after the first session. Because this
course if fast paced, student will be expected to practice the concepts
learned in each class, outside of class at least 4 days per week for 10 - 15
minutes each day in order to retain the concepts. A pencil and a sheet
of paper for taking notes are required during each session. If your
child is going to miss any sessions, please speak to the instructor so that
she can make arrangements to cover the missed materials. This course
if good for a range of abilities, beginners can learn the basics of ASL,
while more advanced signers can use this course for practice, like working
on ASL sentence structure (ASL uses a different sentence structure than
English) and facial expressions that are a very important part of
communicating in ASL, also if you don't sue your second languages regularly,
you do not tend to retain the language. |
